The back of my copy has the following to sayThis account of Mrs Pendlebury s collapse is one of the most accurate and skillfully drawn descriptions of madness which I have seen in the whole of contemporary fiction if my description of the book makes it sound depressing I can only say it isn t The Seduction of Mrs Pendlebury is beautifully written and a joy to read Auberon WaughMy first thought is to say LIES I spent about two weeks on a book I should have finished in two days Why Because 34 of it is so dreadfully dull It s basically just Mrs Pendlebury going about her anti social ways hating everyone around her with a passion Frankly I deeply admire Mr Pendlebury s patience because I felt this pressing need to violently shake the womanIf I think back on what I felt through most of the book I d have to say sorrow Being old and having other people scare you must be terrible And then as if things were not depressing enough you start seeing death everywhereFor a while I was really happy when Mrs Pendlebury made her first friend I was almost picturing myself writing this review in a chidding tone with something like Can you imagine that I thought she d go mad Whatever made me think that and then everything started to happen just so uickly and unexpectedly It took me totally by surprise rather like it happened for Alice Oram s characterLike someone before me had said this is not a book to take with you on a holiday Nor is it something you should pick up on a whim like I did but it is certainly a book worth reading You ll most probably find it utterly depressing but if you manage to get through with it you ll also see the author s brilliant character portrayalScore 27I hesitate to give it a full 3 out 5 because I didn t exactly enjoy it As a matter of fact I mostly found it a drag to keep reading Nevertheless it definitely left a deep and meaningful impact on me

Most of us have had a Rose Pendlebury in our lives as a relative or neighbor She is easily offended terse prickly and critical In this book Margaret Forster introduces Rose and her husband Stanley an elderly couple living in a suburban English neighborhood They are virtual recluses among young families until new next door neighbors move in with their toddler Amy Surprisingly Rose is drawn to young children and her relationship with Amy and Amy s mother Alice provides a sense of temporary belonging that has been missing Reading this book I was reminded of Olive Kitteridge and Hyacinth Bucket on Keeping Up Appearances Their husbands and Stanley seem to be typical of men married to women with this particular personality disorder they are submissive resigned to keeping the peace and and always alert to the nuances of their wives moods Margaret Forster has written a sad poignant story with grace and sympathy
