I found this text to be uite uniue Through very minimal text we learn about many influential black members of American history We learn that by each person doing what he or she did another person had the opportunity to do what he or she did and make a different The text begins with a foreword The first sentences read Rosa sat so Martin could march Martin marched so Barack could run Barack ran so our children can soar The foreword explains the importance of the text to follow The pages of the text dedicate each two pages to a single historical figure The text mimics the first sentences of the forward I uoted above The images are each created by a different illustrator They are each beautiful and uniue and really show the reader what that person did to make an impactThe author included brief histories of each individual represented within the text at the end of the book She listed their years of life as well as the important change they made during their life After this there is also a blurb about each illustrator and the historical figure they represented in their artwork within the text of the bookI think this book is extremely impactful even though it has simple text This would be a great text to use with students to introduce a research unit in fourth or fifth grade It could also be used with younger students but they might have difficulty understanding the importance of each person represented Because the text is so simple I think it s important that students engage in discussion or complete research after reading this
